NANS-Diaspora History
National Association of Nigeria Students in Diaspora
The organization which officially kick-started in May 2018 with ten members, which brought in its first Executive on board and other comrades from all over the world as members of the Executive council through an election process that was conducted online. By this charter, the executive received a one-year mandate from member countries to:
- bring more countries into membership
- bring the organization to recognition
- produce a constitution that is subject to review, support and speak for the Nigerian students in diaspora
- legitimize the organization and conduct an election.
By November 2019, the majority of the projects had not been carried out, but at the time, the constitution had been produced and the membership had begun to grow. In a convention held online in December 2019, the mandate given to the leadership of this great organization was extended for another nine months, so as to complete these projects.
In February 2020, a global pandemic that put the whole world on lockdown and changed the nature of things hit the leadership, thus nothing was achieved. However, the leadership of the organization were able to assist in the evacuation of diaspora students and provide some level of financial support to a few of our member unions. With this project, over 800 Nigerian students were evacuated from three countries with the help of the leadership of this organization. The leadership resumed its goal in 2021 and some members of the leadership proceeded on a trip to Nigeria to harmonize and legitimize the organization, as well as form solid collaborations.
By September 2021, the leadership was able to have brought in more member countries, we had also produced a constitution, supported several Nigerian students in diaspora, and legitimized the organization by bringing recognition from the mother body, several embassies, and so many parastatal governments.
